The Riverdale Rays Swim Team program is seeking one qualified Assistant Coach for the 2024 swim season. The Riverdale Rays team is located at Riverdale Pool in Hampton, Virginia. The Rays currently compete in the Blue Division of the Greater Peninsula Swim Association (GPSA). 

We are looking for an individual to assist the head coach in leading swimmers of all ability levels in our developmental and competitive summer swim league. Evening practices begin mid to late May. Once Hampton City public schools have ended for the school year, practices are held each morning from 6:45am – 10:00am Monday-Friday.

Swim Meets are held on weekday evenings throughout the Peninsula area until the end of July. The championship meet, called City Meet, is usually held the last Saturday in July or first Saturday in August. 

The ideal candidate would have his/her own swim team experience, be a strong and cooperative team player, the ability to connect with children from grades K-12, and an infectious enthusiasm for the sport of swimming. The candidate will work closely with the head coach and swim team Board members to carry out the many day-to-day responsibilities of running the swim season.

Responsibilities and Duties to assist the Head Coach in their responsibilities to:

* Provide an environment that is safe, fun, encouraging, fosters learning, and promotes team spirit 

* Plan and run practices for each age group. This includes: Identifying age and skill appropriate drills for each age group to include strokes, starts, turns, etc. Providing stroke technique instruction to beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimmers. Willingness to get in the water to fine tune stroke mechanics 

* Reviewing meet results (including disqualification issues) and work with swimmers to improve performance 

* Setting up and breaking down of all swim practices

* Maintaining control and safety of swimmers 

* Work with the Board to organize all swim meets, including City Meet.

This includes: Preparing meet lineups making sure to be aware of all rules and regulations outlined by GPSA. Coordinating with the board during set-up of the meet to organize swimmers and communicate necessary meet information to swimmers and parents. 

* Running pre-meet warm up and providing instruction/feedback to swimmers throughout meet 

* Help to coordinate team awards with Board for the End-of-the-Season Celebration (usually held sometime after City Meet)

Qualifications: * Prior experience assisting a swim team head coach or a swim team member for multiple years 

* Current Lifeguard certification 

* Valid CPR/AED, First-Aid certification 

* A strong team player and great with kids
